78 240 M46 Fluid Change

To drain the overdrive you will have to remove the six 1/4 inch bolts (7/16" hex head) that hold the overdrive sump on. You should have a gasket on had when you do this, but I have a great method to preserve the gasket. Once you have removed the six bolts, strike the sump cover firmly sideways with a hammer. This alwasy works to break the bond between the gasket and sump cover without damaging the gasket. But, have the gasket on hand, you might not be so lucky.

You should clean the sump screen, and it would be a good idea to remove the OD filter and clean it. It takes a 3/16" pin spanner wrench to remove the plug which retains the OD filter.
