Ghost in the machine? 900 1995

I took the wagon to a very reputable mechanic for a 80k service along with a trans fluid and gasket replacement. They handled everything great. On the way home I drove it on the highway for about 20 miles and then pulled off onto the side streets. It started to mis shift and basically slip into neutral. 1st gear was good but once it got to 2nd I needed to rev to about 4k rpm to get a gear to catch. I checked the trans fluid according to the manual and it read way overfilled. They agreed to flatbed it to their shop the next day. I checked the fluid level the next morning and got the same results (I might have been doing it wrong). They confirmed the same problems but the fluid level was at a normal level. They spent the better part of the day giving the trans a THOROUGH inspection, without finding anything out of whack. The old fluid was in good shape when they did the orignal drain. Having exhausted every option except doing a full trans swap, the decision was made to put to it back together and see what happened. I have had it for two days now without any problems whatsoever. Again, I think the shop did a great job and I will return there. But,I am interested to see if there are any opinions out there as to what the hell happened.

Thanks
