Changing Tranny Fluid? 200 1990

Got a question for the board. A buddy of mine called tonite to say that he had changed the tranny fluid in his 90 240. He said that the book that he was reading said that he should get about 5 quarts of fluid out the the tranny by removing the pan and filter tranny holds about 7 Quarts. He said that when he rolled out from under the car there only seem to be about 3 quarts of fluid.

What should he have done to get the extra 2 quarts of fluid out of the tranny? Is there some trick to getting that other fluid out?
