higher fuel consumption after changing in tank fuel pump 900

After changing the in-tank fuel pump on my fathers 940, fuel consumption has gone up from 0.9L/10km to 1.1-1.2L/10km. Also the gauge is acting funny, it goes down to 3/4 full after just 100km, it stays around 1/2 full after 200km and moves around below and more than 1/2 full and the it can suddenly drop to 1/4 full and stay there a while.... There is no smell of gas so if there's a like it would be very small.

Any ideas?
