Brakes and Springs... 700 1985

While I do love my new 760 Turbo, I have mixed felings about the brakes, they seem plenty strong, but are rather to touchy, feeling over assisted.
Has anyone used any particular brake pads that dull the sudden bite a bit? I know some of the metalic mix pads have less instant bite, has anyone had sucess with them?, it would be nice to know a few brands that people are having success with.
Call me picky, but I like a lot more progessive feel to my brakes, people usually think I'm crazy for saying this, but I think my old VW Bug to me had the best feeling brakes around, but I suspect a lot of Beetle owners will agree with me.

My other question is about springs, I know people have all sorts of opinions about diffrent ones, but I'm not so sure anyone has posted asking this before.

Which springs give the least drop and without being too stiff?, seems an odd request, but I drive on real roads around here, nothing but potholes as far as the eye can see, and even the new sections of road look like they were put down by blind men.
My 760 is an early Turbo, meaning it's already 15mm lower than most 700 series, and I don't think it really needs to be that much lower.
My main reason for all this is that I know my rear shocks are on the way out (nivomat so of course I want to do a conversion), and all the standard height springs on the market will raise my car because no one makes early 760 height springs, so I'll have to go lowered, but I don't want real low or real hard, so does anyone know which spring is a good choice?

Thanks in advance.
