Handbrake / Parking brake lever stuck! 200 1989

Hello there,

My handbrake (although you fine americans probably call it a parking brake) lever has come so far up that its popped off the end of the ratchet, and now the button is stuck outwards and the lever won't move at all.
I know I should've adjusted it so this couldn't happen, Its just that its an outdoor job and its cold in london at the moment. I feel rightly stupid.
anyway, where do I start? has this happened to anyone before?
