Noisy at start up 900 1991

Have a '91 Turbo Wagon. Car is a real champ but---when I first start it, sounds like diesel!!! Pulled alongside another 940 wagon the other day at the stop light and it didn't make a sound. Even after it warms up, it still has a pronounced tapping sound. What will fix it? Should I go for a valve job or a complete overhaul? Car has 130,000 miles now & I'd like to put another 100K on it.
