Ball joint replacement when replacing strut inserts? 700 1988

if i am thinking correctly, the entire strut houseing sits on top of the ball joint, the pressure that would be applied to the parts below would be pretty tough and might do some damage, but when i removed mine on both cars from what i can tell now this is from looking and doing it all, its actually isnt possible to replace the ball joint without actually compressing the spring, now i might just be wrong and i am missing something i am only baseing that on when i have done it, please let me know if theres another way as it would deff be something nice to know. thanks
