yes, but you lose some of the benefit of the synthetic as a result. what's been suggested by many is to buy a bunch of cheap regular dexon III ATF, and flush your system with that first. drive it around for a few dozen miles (maybe even 100 miles... not sure) and then do another flush with the synthetic this time. thus your crudded up old ATF won't 'contaminate' the new (and very expensive) synthetic ATF.
