Steering Gear 1985 240DL 200 1985

I have an 85 240 DL. After completing a left turn and the wheels are going back to a straight line there is a hard knock feeling and the steering wobbles for a second or two. I think it is the steering gear and the whole assembly needs to be replaced, but most posts say don't replace the whole unit. I could use some help on this one. Thanks, Nick
