New Volvo Owner...Factory Radio Problem 200 1990

My wife and I are new Volvo owners (1990 240DL) and we must say, very pleased so far. Her for the retro look and me for its simplicity. I have started on the first of many projects and hope they do not go as unexpectedly. The factory stereo was somewhat of a gremlin. Four speakers and none of them worked at the same time, maybe two at a time if we were lucky, so I thought I would replace it (besides, wife wanted a CD player). I found a website online that gave me a run-down on the wiring harness in the back of the old radio. Only when I spliced the old harness (off the radio) into the new harness according to the manufacturer's color code, nothing. So I tried connecting and disconnecting with the battery hooked up, and there was a chime, only briefly.

Could someone please tell me what all the wires coming out of my dash are for? I expect my problem lies somewhere in one of the 3 adapters that I did not connect. Here is what I have...1 x 8 wire, 1 x 4 wire, and 1 x 2 wire. The 8 wire and the 2 wire were connected to the factory radio, and the 4 wire was connected to the amp behind the glove box. In installing the new radio, I only connected the 8 wire.
