How to thoroughly clean undercarriage?

The previous owner of this 92 740 had a pretty good oil leak for some time as well as running over a few varmits. Hence the underneath of the car is pretty grizzley-oily mess with bits of hair everywhere. This situation makes for a pretty difficult environment for working on things down there. I was considering steam cleaing but thought it may be cost prohibitive (I am poor). Anyone have good results with a certain chemical and process? I'd love to hear your stories!
