Well, it stopped raining long enough to get back out and continue but temps are below freezing so the soaked insulating pad in the front of the car is a solid piece and stuck to the towel I shoved under it to soak up the water.
I've removed the center console up to the center vents. Haynes is a big help. The stereo, cig lighter and tray, side console pieces, glovebox and trim pieces under the steering wheel and glovebox have all been removedl. Right now my garage floor is covered with the interior bits of my car.
Here's the FYI part of this post. My suspicions were correct. The front insulating mat is one piece and crosses the transmission tunnel. To pull it out I'll also have to pull the heating A/C ductwork that feed under the seats to the rear and the fuse panel which is now sitting securely in it's base, on the tunnel.
I'm not going to this so the only option is to cut the insulating mat in two places, similar to the carpet. That will leave the section under the ductwork/fusepanel in place and allow me to remove the wet footwell sections. Then I'll seal the offending vents and put the driver's seat back in. At least I can commute this way until I treat the minor surface rust on the floor and make sure the leaks are fixed. Then I'll reassemble everything.
