Greetings, Bricksters, from Cleveland: We're talking about my '87 daily driver, 196K, runs well in all types of weather, has 4speed automatic trans with the top gear lock out, activated by that little button on the side of the shift knob. Had a small break in the weather yesterday and I foolishly took the Swede in for a car wash. I'm really weary of salt and crap on my suit and topcoat when I get in or out of the car....besides, it just looks that much better when it's clean. So, I guess I'm at least partially responsible for the bad weather that hit this area last night. Mea culpa. Anyway, the problem is that I cannot get top gear. Activating the button illuminates the lamp (the one with the arrow that points up), and hitting the button again causes the lamp to go out. But, no change in the transmission. Obviously then, third gear on the freeway, while sounding nice, limits my speed to about 55-60. I know I'm not doing the engine any good. The question, other than the obvious, is whether or not top gear is activated by a 'power on' solenoid or whether a 'power on' mode prevents the top gear from activation. The reason I ask is to determine if I'm looking for a broken wire, or a 'hot' short. Or maybe a solenoid that's smoked. If so, where is it? Any help out there? As always, thanks in advance....
