Short version:
Fresh plugs, cold engine: starts, chugs and fouls quickly but not fatally
Plugs used at all, cold engine: no start, fouls heavily - looks like graphite
Fresh plugs, warm start: Starts ok, limps, fouls but not so fast or heavily
Plugs used some, warm engine: Starts a little hard, limps, fouls plugs more but still not like cold start.
Dark black tailpipe, there is black smoke but not a cloud; I can smell gas in the exhaust.
Cold-start injector disconnected as test
I think fault codes have been read; I'll make sure they are again anyway.
I'm after a Bently manual...
There *is* a logic-problem solution to this, and I *will* solve it, what with all my testing to be done.
The long version:
It *can* start, but not after it has run for more than a few minutes then fully cooled off -- the plugs foul so heavy the soot brushes off like ash. It starts and limps if I put new plugs in and then do not turn it off. When I run it for a bit, and check the plugs, they are black, but not piled on with soot like they are after a cold start.
If I put new plugs in before trying to start cold, it starts but runs horribly, little power, horrible acceleration. I check the plugs after running it this way for 5 minutes, they are fouled pretty dark. If I kill the engine and let it sit a bit, it will hardly start. Cold engine, no start. After a good warm-up, or even in the middle of a nice warm day (still have them in February this far south), the car starts and runs (again horribly) but doesn't make the plugs look like you scrubbed a chimney with them.
Best possible performance is if I put in bright new plugs for the cold start, run them til the engine's warm, then clean/gap or replace the plugs. Still runs awful, but it will limp until I have to start it again.
Hope this is clearer, and hope there are still a couple of people not too annoyed to read these
