Silly Question 900 1994

My wife came home today, rather nonplussed! She had bought a plastic magnetic sign to advertise her pet photography business with the intention of sticking it to the tailgate of her '94 940. No such luck - the sign just dropped off!
It sounds like metal when you rap on it, but I quess it must be aluminum or some such. Same with my 850 wagon - the sign works fine on the doors of both vehicles, but not on the tailgates. Anyone able to enlighten me on what these tailgates are made of?
The Bear in east central Florida.
