Shade tree in NYC? Need shop space!

My brother and I are pushing the limits of being "shade tree mechanics" since we don't have even have a tree to work under. We do all of our repairs on the street in front of his Brooklyn apartment and have found this to be pretty limitting, especially in the winter.

Does anyone know of any co-op style garages around New York City?... or even some kind of car club where we could pitch in some kind of regular dues and have access to a garage bay, lift etc...?
