Hope somebody has a good answer for you!

I'm also in the NY area, and in the same bind. I do a little in the street, and usually try to find a secluded corner in a parking lot for any under-car type stuff. I used to go to a nearby park, but got tossed out a couple months ago when I was changing my oil... apparently that's against the rules.
