Car won't start! 1800 1972

My '72 ES has a tired engine, but has always started quickly, even in very cold weather. Yesterday my son dug it out from the blizzard (I live just north of DC). He pulled the car up a few feet to clear out a path where it had been. When he tried to put the car back up the driveway it started, but sputtered. I got home last night and moved it again, just to switch places in the drive. It sounded like it was only hitting on two cylinders. This morning I pulled the plugs, which were black and smelled of gas. Cleaned them up and started the car--still sounded like only two cylinders. I left it running and pulled the #3 wire--no change. I put that wire back on and pulled #1--the engine died. I cleaned the points, cleaned the trigger points at the base of the distributer, pulled the plugs and cleaned them again. Still won't start. It will fire a couple of times, but won't run at all. Any suggestions on where to go next?
