Auto trans hard shifts 700

I have an 87 760turbo with automatic transmission. My problem is that there is a hard shift when the trans shifts from 1-2 and 2-3, also when it shifts from 2-1 when slowing down. The shift from 3-4(od) is always smooth. Also when I accelerate hard with shifting occuring around 3.5 or 4k rpm the trans shifts very smooth. I don't know the history of the transmission other than it was supposedly replaced recently (but before I bought it) and that the fluid is full and red. What could cause these hard clunky shifts? Also the car makes a loud and hard clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse. Thanks in advance.
