transmission noises?? 700 1990

Last weekend as I drove my 1990 740 16-valve down a snowy Iowa road, I started to hear an occasional thumping noise from the bottom of the car. A few miles later I was slowing down and heard a grinding type noise along with the thumping. After stopping the car I put the car into park and then back into drive. The grinding and thumping noises were gone. Then the other day I thought I heard another thump. Anybody else have this problem or does anyone have an idea of what to check?
