1990 740 - Radio light for station indicator normally does not work, radio fine

The indicator light for my factory radio and cassetee player does not normally work, however, once in a while it comes on for a few seconds when the car is first started, but then goes back out. From reading this forum, it seems like the radio may have a solder problem, like my fuel filter relay had a few years ago (boy was that fun to find). I am somewhat mechnically and alectically inclined (I have had a HAM radio license and work with computers), but am not real familiar with removing radio's from vehicle and replacing them or installing new ones. How do I get the radio out, what do I repair and how do I get it back in without causing any dash or other damage and do you think this is worth fixing? Other than the light (I cannot tell what station I am on), the radio and cassette work fine.
