We were on the verge of trading the car last week (92 740 wagon, 114,000 miles), until I realized that I couldn't buy half the car the 740 is for less than 30K. So even though it's only "worth" 3K, I think its intrinsic value is such that spending a couple of K to get it up to snuff is more than worth it.
So far I have:
Fixed the tranny's weirdness by adjusting the kickdown, flushing it, and also have a new OD relay planned (may need a solenoid too)
Fixed the tailgate panel
Ordered a CD player from Crutchfeld
Fixed the antenna
Changed the plugs, air filter, and polished/lubed everything inside engine bay
Lubed all door latches, locks, what have you
Ordered replacement turn signal units (had holes in glass)
Replaced some bulbs
Cleaned and Armoralled everything
Ordered a whole lot of little trim bits-n-pieces
Run Techron through the fuel system
Replaced rubber feet on gas cap hatch (used vacuum tube caps, cut down suitably)
Remounted, adjusted rear wiper motor
Replaced headlight bulbs
replaced wiper blades
Washed, vacuumed
Replaced PS, Alternator, AC belts
New set of 30 dollar hubcaps
Yet to do:
Fix rear seat, currently broken in 'up' position
Replace shocks/struts
Flush brake fluid
Replace O2 sensor
Install new CD and turn signal units when they come
Replace driver's side door, have it painted, because window track popped a weld 2 years ago and I can't figure out how to fix the track, hence door replacement is in order (suggestions welcome if there's a fix)
Even though none of these things is that dire, it's amazing how, in the aggregate, they amounted to a car that didn't seem worth keeping. Already the car seems transformed, and I'm thinking I was crazy to ever consider selling it.
The car already has a new exhaust, cat-back, new battery, new fuel injectors, brakes one year old, tires 8 months old. So she's solid. I am pleased.
But that's the difference between a Volvo or a Porsche, and something like a Pontiac. The Pontiac wouldn't be worth the trouble...
cheers
Thaddeus
