Where's this canister supposed to be? 200

I assume that the big metal canister with the vaccum hoses running out of it is the vapor recovery thingy. On the sedan, the canister is on the passenger's side right by the firewall. On the wagon, the thing is right next to the battery.

Which one is stock? Any thoughts on which one would be a better place for it? I figure despite being closer to the turbo, having a tank full of vapors back by the firewall is a safer idea.
