First off,
Thank you to the question answerers, past, present and future. You guys are an incredible resource.
I am adjusting my kickdown cable and at the moment, my car shifts from 2nd to 3rd at approximately 4000 RPM, when accelerating moderately. It seems a little high and I am wondering what I should aim for.
Could someone please let me know what the proper range is for shifting through all gears?
I have seen this before, whether on this board or in a manual but cannot locate the info at the moment.
Thanks
Lastly, my transmission story...(not part of the question, more of a ramble)
I have had my Volvo for 14 months.
After purchasing for a good(?) price ($2300), I noticed it was leaking a little transmission fluid, so I took it into a shop (which I won't mention by name but is in Berkeley, Ca, alleged Volvo specialists). I thought going in it would be repaired for maybe a couple hundred bucks. For a $90 charge, I was told that:
1. yes there was a leak
2. the transmission was shifting at too high RPMs, could be on its last legs
and
3.not to put any money into the car because of this.
So for about 10 months, I drove this car taking my foot off the accelerator to allow it to shift without going into too high RPMs, waiting for the end.
Getting sick of the leak, and noticing no further problems with the transmission "on its last legs", I called Model Garage(again in Berkeley but on Shattuck). Over the phone, Peter diagnosed the problem as likely being the kickdown cable which had broken away from its proper position (readily apparent to anybody who knows the function of the cable that it was messed up) and was consequently too tight.
I took it over, Peter fixed it for FREE and the car runs beautifully (in need of only some fine tuning).
Of course, (I should have known) all this info is on the Brickboard, although getting the word from a specialist had convinced me it was a major problem and not the simple things.
From this and other small problems (overdrive relay, power seat switch), it is usually the little things that go wrong on for (at least this) Volvo and not the big things that we dread.
