Ways to check early Motronic fault codes??? 700 1985

Ok so I know there is something off on the injection system on my 85 Turbo 760 (bad idle etc), and I know the Motronic computer should have an idea of what's wrong in the system, the only problem is getting that info out of the computer.

I know all the later model units have the flash codes etc, but does anyone know how to get the info I want out of the early Motronic units?

I was hoping I could do it all myself, but without a $1000 interface I'm not so sure I'm going to have any luck, and I wanted to avoid having to take the car to a $70 and hour specialist.

I'm surprised no one has ever come up with a cable and computer program you can use on your home computer to do all this.
