89 240 wagon with v6 200 1989

I have heard negative rumblings about the v6. Somehow I got the impression they were not in production very long. I am considering a 1989 SW for $1990.00 in the atlanta area. I have not looked at it yet. How bad are the V6 engines and what goes wrong with them?
I am waiting for parts for 83 245 and wondering if i should continue fixing 83 that is paid for or get a newer model.
