240 exhaust systems 200

All years of the 240 that I've observed seem to have the same niggling defect in their exhaust systems; I have also discussed this on another Internet message board (Edmunds Town Hall). It seems that the rubber clip/donuts that hold the tailpipe up on 240s tend to break as the cars age, thus giving the impression that the pipe is about to fall off. My dad's friend's '75 244 did that, both of my friend's '84 245 wagons did that, even my neighbor's '93 245 wagon is doing that right now. His (my neighbor's) tailpipe is hanging by just one clip now. Any comments on this common Volvo failing?
