Constant stalling 140-160 1975

hello,

major new irritation with my 1975 164e...

first, i had some "bogging down" - generally at highway speeds (60+mph) - the car would, without warning, "bog down", ie: feel like gas delivery was lost and feel like i was hitting the brakes - slowed so drastically that it would lurch me forward a bit. but this would last only 1-2 seconds then back up to speed.

it happened rarely, so i did not worry about it very much.

then yesterday it stalled while driving in normal city traffic. repeated attempts to start it were typically unsuccessful; the one time of ten it would start, it would run just fine for about 2-3 seconds at proper RPM and with no backfires etc, then stall again.

trying to start with foot on the gas, foot off the gas, foot pumping while starting all yielded the same results.

seems to me a fuel delivery issue. but what are the possible causes? anything from bad fuel pump to clogged filter to...??

i don't believe it to be serious, but a top-down check-list of the few most common items would be appreciated if anyone has ideas.

many thanks.

-daniel
