Clunk Upon Acceleration 200 1989

----My friend asked me to post a question for him. He has a 1989 240 DL, with a manual 5-speed trans. He bought it in October, cheap with 227k. Recently he has heard a clunk coming from the rear when he pushes in the gas pedal and when he abruptly releases the accelerator as well.
----It first happened after he was teaching his brother to drive a manual trans. and lasted for a week after. The noise returned this week after a another inexperienced friend drove it. I rode along with him and heard it and agreed with him that it's probably something with the RWD. He's just looking for advice, any suggestions as to what the noise is would help. Anyone experience this?
