3 Blown Starters? 700 1986

I attempted to start my car yesterday and as it tried to turn over I heard a faint poof and a small cloud of smoke came out of the hood.
After unsuccessful attempts to re-start the car I surmised (Battery fine, no response while turning the key) that I had indeed blown my 3rd starter in 8 months.
After tapping on the starter with a hammer and turning the key the car started and I dropped it off at my mechanic to be worked on this morning.

I guess my question is, does the 740 have a history of blowing starters or have starters been a trouble spot for the 740?

Could blowing 3 starters in an 8 month period be a sign of trouble somewhere else?

I'm stumped and totally sick of paying for starters.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated...
