Why does it only leak half a quart? 700 1988

I have an 88 740T with 237k with a peculiar problem. It leaks/burns oil but it will only leak/burn half a quart. If I don't add anymore oil, no more oil is used! I don't want to run the car a half quart low all the time, I would rather find the problem. The pcv system has been recently cleaned as that was my first suspect. Step two is to replace the leaking seals (distributor) and see if I still go down a half quart. Any ideas? Thanks.
