At this point, it good to have this problem over with (knock on wood).
The parts are cheap and easy enough to change as a preventative measure against
tow trucks. (power stage and fuse holder)
But as I drive down the freeway and hit a hole, I still get nervous thinking the problem is back.
I think the 700 series use the same Bosch Z-116 ignition system as the later
240's. If you do a search on "power stage" in the archives, you will find
a bunch of 700 owners talk about intermittent ignition failers relating to
the power stage.
So I can't understand why not more 240 owner come forward with the same
problem, as both use the exact same system and Bosch parts. Though I should add that I called the IPD Volvo service guy, who was really patient and helpful, and asked him about power stages. His opinion is that they either work or are dead, nothing in between (contrary to 700 owner's posts). He said they get burnt out and you can smell them upon opening the hood.
Perhaps my wagon's problem was in the 25 amp fuse, though after I changed it I didn't think the copper pinchers seem that corroded. Now I put in a West Marine in-line fuse (cost only $3), used heat-shrink tubes on the joints and electrical tape for strength...grrrr...
