Getting radio code w/o VIN

Somehow they use the serial number to get the code for the radio. I brought in the radio and it took them 5 minutes to get the number. Radio works great! Except I snapped the wood trim ring around the original radio trying to transfer it to the new one. I'll wait until it warms up tom. and bring out my wifes hair dryer to warm up the glue then peel it off for the new radio.
