Odd looking hose on rear axle 900 1991

Hey all,

This morning I was servicing my 91 940. I jacked up the rear of the car and took of the wheels. On the right hand side (driver's side in Oz) about 4 inches or so from the differential housing I noticed a hose of sorts. It's about a foot long and fairly thin and it comes off the top of the axle. It wasn't attached to anything and the end of it appeared to be sealed up. I realise this is a vague description but does anyone know what this might be and if it serves any purpose? If I had a digital camera I'd post a pic of it.

Thanks

Brad
