replace temp. control valve on '91'245 200

I'm trying to replace my temp. control valve under the dash on my 91 245 and I am going in from the drivers side lower area and I have the hoses clamped, one from engine side of firewall and the other from passanger side becouse their is no room any closer. Problem is that oval rubber part that has the copper temp. coil. I can't get the old one to come out. Bentley isn't helpful on this one. It looks like maybe the plastic housing that it goes into has to be opened by removing metal clips but I don't know if I will be taking a bath if I seperate it and it looks like I will have to open up a lot more of the dash to do it. Does anyone have a trick for getting that piece out easily.

Thanks, lenny
