Looking for how water is making it's way behind the vent plug on the driver's footwell, I removed the windshield wipers and cowling. I needed to do this anyway as the vent screen had come unglued and fallen.
I need some help with how the pieces I uncovered are supposed to work. Once the cowl was off, I pulled out the fallen screen. On the passenger's side, there's a plastic shroud that had also come unglued from the area below the windshield and was hanging. It looks like it's supposed to divert water to the space between the passenger interior sheetmetal and the outer fender. Pulling this shroud off reveals the heater/ac blower squirrel cage so yes, it looks like it's supposed to keep water out. You can look down and see the blower fan.
Also under the shroud, between the fan intake and the passenger-side wiper pivot is a screen similar to the vent screen, but about 4"X6" and glued about 1/8" off the bottom of this area. Don't know what it could be for.
Over on the driver's side, it looks like water entering the cowling vent is free to run down between the outer fender and inner sheet metal, where I suspect the leaking plug is. Or is the plug actually sealing an air duct? I don't have a replacement yet so I haven't broken out the leaking plug.
I think water is making it's way to the blower area and travelling from there. Anyone else walk this path before me? What is a suitable glue to use in place of Volvo's black "tar"?
Thanks,
