oil change/ maintenance frequecy? 200 1993

I just bought my first Volvo the other day. And I'm already confused. The owner's manual recommends oil and filter changes at 10,000 mile intervals, but I've seen many suggestions on the web to do it at shorter intervals, like 5,000 miles or so, depending on driving conditions.
And then, to complicate things, there's the issue of sythetic oil. The PO of this 245 used Halvoline 10w30, and probably took the car to one of those McOilchange franchises, so I want to 'rescue' this brick, and give her only the best from now on.
If you have any suggestions, do be so kind as to mention some oil and filter name brands, and the best sources for procuring them.

Confused in Carolina,
King Foo
