If the tach needle does not move at all, you have an ignition circuit problem. There is lots of good info on that in the 700/900 FAQ. Read and digest that, and then post again if you continue to have trouble.

No you don't need a fuel pressure gauge. If you just barely loosen the fitting, you should be able to verify fuel pressure. Oh, yes, put out the cigarette before you do that test.
