Hmmm a friend and I both had very similarly prepped VW Beetles (REAL ones, with the engine in the back!) and he was pulled over in his one day, with similar results. The cop just shook his head and gave him a warning, but he was laughing, saying he didn't think a Bug would go 100. :)
Mine did, actually exceeded 100 one time a Porsche 928 came screaming by and I wanted to find out how fast he was going. I followed for a while and he just kept pulling away at 105+.... certainly he was in a much better car for that, and probably was a whole lot more comfortable as well, but the VW would hold its own.
As for the Volvos, they all seem to top out at 100-105. But they feel like they have more to give. The 740 is more comfortable but the 240s actually do feel stable at those speeds, once all the front end shakes and clunks are fixed. The 87 has never been over 80 since I've had it, but it feels exactly as strong as the others.
Anyone see Grassroots Motorsports report a few months ago on a 262C, V8-powered land-speed-record car? I'm not making this up- it's been a regular apparently at East Coast Timing Association events in North Carolina. Looks like a normal Volvo other than it sits low and it has umm, an extra front bumper bolted below the regular front bumper. Says it helps with airflow. I say, at least they're twice as safe if it all comes apart. Top reported speed: 162 mph.
