Airbag question.. 700 1988

Picking parts from a dead '88 740GL I noticed that even though it looks like the car was in an offset frontal crash the airbag didn't deploy. The front corner, headlights, frame, airbox etc are pushed into the alternator so it was a pretty good hit. Maybe the airbag wasn't working? What does it take to trigger it?
