My friend, Sam, brought it to my attention that one of his co-workers is trying to unload a low mileage 75 242 for $1k. I surely don't need a third car (and I'm not a big coupe fan), and my first instinct was to just groan at it being a 75 (B20F, old style dash, various fuel system gotchas, old style suspension and driveline stuff, lots of model year specific parts, etc).
But, as always, there's a catch. The leather (vinyl?) interior, is apparently in fantastic shape, as is the body. The only rust seems to be a hole in the bottom of the trunk, floorpan looks fine. Even more interesting, it's a manual. M41, right?
The initial thought was to fix it up as near to perfection as possible, and sell it to someone (probably someone looking for a nice 242 project) for profit. But in the back of my head, I kept thinking.. who would pay lots of money for a nice 75 242?
And then tweedle dee spoke up. There's a 245T in sorry shape down the street. Hasn't moved in at least a week. It's got some obvious accident damage, but it's got Virgos and a manual... wouldn't that be fun to build up a 242 turbo.. Same fuel injection setup to boot.
And finally tweedle dumber had his say. That 75 164E is still setting up there in Reno, and could be had for less than $200 for sure. Needs seats, a respray, and a transmission. And suddenly the thought of ripping out that nice interior and putting it into the 164, along with the manual transmission came to mind. And of course, along with that came the thought of rigging up a MegaSquirt setup to save on the D-Jetronic repairs.
Questions are:
Do any of these scenarios seem destined for success (or at least a small profit)?
Anyone looking for a(n early) 242?
Will the transmission from the 242 bolt up easily to the 164?
Anyone looking for some parts from a 75 240? Aux Air Valve? Electronic distributor?
If I wasn't so attached to my 244, I'd ditch it for the 164 in a heartbeat.. but damn.. having a wagon is so addicting :-D
