240 not driven anymore 200 1987

Since getting an 850,(love it) I haven't driven the ol' 240. The plan was for my mother to take it, but it has remained in storage:
What is the proper way to keep it in storage? It had been run occasionally until past few months. Battery is drained. Please no posts about brick abuse.
When I last jumped it, some smelly smoke started rising from the manifold area. What might that be?
Should I sell it or keep it? I might have use for it in the next year, but can't spend much on it now. It has 124K and is in good shape. Lil' bit of rust, lil' rip in the driver seat. It needs the same body repair that's shown in the Haynes guide.

Thanks
