A/C control vacuum actuator replacement 900

The vacuum actuator is bad on my '92 965, and I also experienced this on a '94 964 that I owned for a while. It cost me something like $800 to have it replaced, and all but $80 was labor. So, I am wondering if any of you have experience in replacing this item, and if so, what advice you might be willing to offer. I have read the "fix" on the 700/900 FAQ, but didn't get the idea that I would be happy with that as a solution. I expect that it would be a highly tedious effort, but have no feel for the complexity/risk. Thanks in advance!
