electrical quandary, whazz next??

The "connected to nothing" wires with the double female connector over near the coil is a test pickup. I don't have the WDM for your year, closest I have is for the 1983, which is the LH fuel injection system. That one shows a double female test pickup near the coil, the wires are pink and blue-white.

The ignition switch may indeed be part, or all of the problem. I have never done a replacement, just remembered to turn the key a tad CCW from P{ositioin II after starting.

The 1983 and forward have 16 fuses in the panel, the 1979 has 12, I don't know when the change was made. You can probably determine which fuses run off which key switch outputs.

The ignition switch has four outputs, identified as S, X, 15, and 50.

"S" is circuits for key in, like the door warning buzzer.
"X" is circuits for auxilliary stuff, radio, w/w and lighter, etc.
"15" is circuits needed to run
"50" is only the starter.

Key position 0 powers S only. (O is just the key. or screwdriver, in the keyhole).

Position I powers S and X

Position II powers S, X, and 15

Position III powers S, 15, and 50. Note that "X" is not powered while starting.

Your problems seem to be on the "X" circuits.

Ask the BBRD for how-to's on the switch replacement. I know it can be done without having to get a new key.

Good Luck,

Bob
