BALL JOINT / FRONT SHOCK REMOVAL INSTALLATION 88 740 WAGON, HOW SIMPLE IS IT? 700

Greetings:

Does anyone know of the easiest method for removing the ball joint off of a 1988 740GLE wagon (377,200 miles well cared for)? Mines bolt on. Do these bolts have a tendency to break off and or strip when one attempts to remove them? Also can i just replace the shocks at the same time? Would I have to really work with the front coil springs (tension)?

Best Regards
