emission system honking

i have an '87 760T that makes a periodic honking-type sound at idle. there is air being expelled from a rubber hose at the left front fender area that is making the noise [i posted this problem several months ago and got alternative explanations but i felt the air come out of this hose]. I believe this is part of the emissions system as there is a a small cylindrical motor [the air pump?]attached to a vacuum motor; also hoses lead to the charcoal canister. two questions: 1) does this system get clogged with gunk and can it be cleaned to quiet the noise? or 2) can i just disconnect the wiring to the air pump to get rid of the noise without hurting performance? thanks very much; this forum is great.
