Convert to Radiator-mounted Electric Fan? 200 1981

I read Jalopy's response to my water pump longevity question where he suggested dumping the viscous fan unit that mounts on the water pump flange and replacing it with a good radiator-mounted electric fan. I'd love to get some feedback from others who have done this. Any ideas about good-quality units to buy, installation tips, any drawbacks to the changeover, estimated cost, etc., would be really appreciated.
