Spring replacement.. 200

A quick question regarding replacement of the front coils (to install lowering coils). I've got a Bentley manual and it says to disconnect the tie rod end from the control arm. Since I don't have a press like it mentions, is it possible to swing the assembly out from the wheel well without disconnecting the tie rod end? Is there enough upward/downward play to swing the assembly out? Are there any other tricks or shortcuts not mentioned in the bible? I'm also planning on picking up the fancy IPD strut nut tool. Those tie rod ends seem like a real P.I.T.A to get back on.... and off for that matter.

thx...
