can't leave well enough alone 200 1987

The clutch on the wife's '87 240(M-47) engages at the end of the pedal stroke(up high).I thought I would adjust the cable adjuster nut to fix it.First I adjusted it the wrong way and I could let the clutch out in gear and not stall.Next I over adjusted it the other way and it was grinding and I could smell it burning.I got it to engage when the pedal was half way up,but it now slips a little. In the process I broke the nylon locknut and now have to use a hose clamp or something to hold the adjuster.
I decided to call it a night and go have a couple beers and tackle it today.I wake up and it's snowing AGAIN!
Good thing we have 3 cars,'cause I'm always messing with one.
P.S. When I got the car 3 years ago($250) the guy said it would need a clutch soon...
